LAFAYETTE — The Cajundome trembled Tuesday with the thunderclap of nu-metal artists Godsmack, as the Boston-based quartet unleashed its hard-edge brand of modern metal mayhem on the Lafayette venue.
Led off by artists Breaking Benjamin and Porch Ghouls, fans couldn’t wait to hear Godsmack blare through a blistering set of hits from its first two releases and its third disc, “Faceless,” which hit the streets in late April.
However, Porch Ghouls did not find much favor from the crowd. They left the stage after only 20 minutes of performance.
It’s the first time Godsmack appeared in Lafayette after canceling the remainder of a tour in September 2001 in support of its second release, “Awake.” That tour, canceled days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, included a Sept. 23 show scheduled for the Cajundome.
Matthew Duplessis, 25, of Baton Rouge said he was glad to finally get to see Godsmack at the Cajundome on Tuesday, but he wasn’t disappointed when the show was canceled in 2001.
“I understand a lot of bands did –– it was just respect for your country.”
The crowd of fans from as far away as Houston, ranging in age from teens to 50s, was somewhat sparse, with the Cajundome’s third level not selling out.
Laurie Domingues, 18, of Lafayette was attending her first concert ever. She said she was awed by the intensity of the sound and the lights.
“I’ll remember this forever. I’ll frame the ticket stub,” Domingues said.
