CONCERT REVIEW

Comfortably dressed in jeans and black T-shirts, Godsmack performed Tuesday at the Giant Center, 950 W. Hersheypark Drive, Derry Twp., and lit the place up. Complete with pyrotechnics, the band delivered tracks with no remorse.

Headlining its own tour serves as a break for Godsmack, which has been opening for Metallica and will resume doing so this month.

With inclement weather outside, something raw was stirring inside. Dropbox and Ill Nino worked the crowd before the headliner took the stage amid the ongoing "Godsmack" chant of the crowd.

As an emcee took over, the lights went out, down came the curtain, and they came out to the strains of the heavy hit "Awake," from their second album. Complete with head-banging and fist-pumping, several hundred fans listened and sang along.

Lead singer Sully Erna served as a source of energy for the crowd, urging them to stand up and move around. He drew attention to some fans, telling them to stand up or go home, but it was all in good humor.

The band's 2003 hit "Faceless" and 1998 tune "Get Up, Get Out" rocked the house during the first half of the concert. Then, something far more engaging happened.

As drummer Shannon Larkin's circular stage moved to the right, Erna, positioned comfortably behind a full set of drums, appeared to the left. He banged away on the bongos while Larkin ripped it up on drums, and the two had a classic faceoff, complete with stick tossing and flashy hand work.

In came the guitars, strumming the classic Aerosmith hit "Walk This Way" to end the faceoff. Erna went back to lead vocals hitting the crowd with "Whatever," done in a call-and-response style.

The show ended with "Keep Away" and "I Stand Alone" as encores, then a big thank-you, complete with hard-rock profanities and hands pumping in the air.

Godsmack puts the "smack" in "smackdown" and puts together a show worth seeing.
